The Padron 50th Anniversary Maduro, also known as “The Hammer,” was made to celebrate the company’s fiftieth year in business. Only a thousand humidors of fifty have been released and retail for $5,300. The owners of the humidors are offered the opportunity to purchase a refill once all cigars are smoked. Each cigar features a unique serial number and comes in a 6.5×52 box-pressed vitola. The blend is entirely Nicaraguan featuring tobacco that has been aged for ten years.
The wrapper offers up a chocolate and manure aroma. The foot gives me a potentfruity, aged tobacco and earthy chocolate aroma. On the cold draw, there is simply a faint earth flavor. Once lit, my palate is hit with black pepper spice, dark cocoa, and espresso. Strength is already noticeably full. Through the nose, the smoke is full bodied with buttery chocolate and potent black pepper spice. The finish gives me black pepper spice and cinnamon with bold earth and espresso.
After forty minutes, the first third closes out. Construction is perfect with plentiful, smooth smoke. On the draw, I find cocoa, black pepper spice, and grassy coffee. Through the nose, there is a mix of toast with rich earth and floral cedar. The finish offers me a delicious buttery chocolate on top of bold espresso and oak. Strength and body are both very full at this point.
The second third closes out at an hour and twenty-five minutes. The flavors on the draw are phenomenal with a sweet cocoa reminiscent of hot chocolate, notes of blackberries, and leather. Through the nose, I find sweet toast with creamy wheat and cedar – a huge contrast to the draw. The finish treats me to a bomb of buttery, creamy chocolate on top of slight citrus and coffee. Strength and body continue to be very full.
The final third gets me all the way to two hours and fifteen minutes. The draw is bold with espresso and dark chocolate paired with a smoky cedar note. On the retro-hale, I pick up vegetal earth with some leather and spicy black pepper. The finish is very long and delicious with more of that buttery, creamy chocolate on top of coffee, sweet pepper, and smoky hickory. Strength and body both finish out at the full mark.
The Padron 50th Anniversary Maduro is hands-down one of the best cigars I’ve ever smoked. It offers immense complexity with an unmatched depth in flavors and is truly a fine smoking experience. The price is steep, ranging anywhere from about $40 to $120 for singles, but this is a cigar every true cigar lover should try out at least once. Construction is top-notch, and the overall experience represents absolute perfection in a cigar. Make note that this is not for the faint of heart with a giant amount of strength and body. Just when I thought Padron cigars couldn’t get any better, they blow me away with this fantastic stick. I highly recommend this one and consider it a “must-smoke” cigar!
