Cigar Review | Oliva Serie V Melanio Maduro

It’s Stog o’Clock, and this time, I review the Oliva Serie V Melanio Maduro in the Torpedo size. This 6.5×52 cigar is the Maduro-wrapped version of Cigar Aficionado’s 2014 Cigar of the Year. The cigar features a gorgeous, rich Mexican San Andrés Maduro wrapper securing a Nicaraguan binder and Nicaraguan fillers.

Pre-light, the wrapper gives off a chocolaty earth aroma with a chocolate covered raspberry smell out of the foot. The cold draw is snug with a slight tobacco flavor. Once lit, the cigar gives me a smooth buttery chocolate with some spice on the tongue. More spice comes through on the finish with some espresso. Through the nose there is black pepper spice alongside chocolate and leather.

After thirty-five minutes, I finish the first third. On the draw, there is a delicious buttery chocolate with some black pepper and cedar. Through the nose, I pick up on some floral earth with a very salty toast note. The finish treats me to sweet cocoa contrasted by spicy leather and espresso. Strength and body are both on the lower end of full.

One hour and twenty minutes in, the second third comes to a close. There is more buttery chocolate on the draw with the introduction of caramel and char. The retro-hale offers spicy leather with a refined roasted almond and some vanilla. On the finish, I find some smoky cedar with more espresso and some black pepper spice. Strength and body have not changed.

The final third ends at the two-hour mark. The buttery chocolate on the draw is now very creamy and producing an additional note of coffee and black pepper. Through the nose, there is some toasty graham cracker with more vanilla and slight leather. The finish has ramped it up a notch with smoky espresso pairing well with a very spicy wood and cinnamon. The strength and body finish out at the low end of full.

The Melanio Maduro is a superb cigar. It offers deep complexity with a broad, balanced range of flavors. It’s just as good as the original Melanio but has the addition of an extra bold, rich element. This is definitely a box-worthy cigar, and I highly recommend it. Don’t miss out on this one!

Smoke on!
