I contemplated the English accent recently, while enjoying a Dunhill 1907 Robusto. Feeling a little like Sherlock Holmes, I think I may have unlocked a bit of a mystery. Allow me to illustrate…
A few years ago, Madonna discovered that an English accent somehow added to her credibility. Some say that it was that English accent that subsequently sparked her momentary sense of philanthropy, manifesting most notably with the advent of a much-hyped all girls academy in the southeastern African township of Liwonde, Malawi. Nevermind that the school was only a dozen flimsy plastic chairs under a dead tree, or that lunch consisted of dirt cookies each day, the fact that Madonna had her bra on UNDER her blouse and she wanted to do something- anything- to improve humanity, left most of us speechless.
I further suggest that if Benny Hill had not been British, he would have had to register as a sex offender. Every British rock band-ever, was cooler by a factor of at least three simply because of their accent. The color green… suddenly becomes awesome when it’s “British racing green”. Henry VIII, Bear Grylls, overcooked muffins, driving on the wrong side of the road, and most of all- Robin Hood- prancing around Sherwood forest in his tights… all inexplicably made cooler somehow because they are British.
As it turns out, the English accent also seems to add some sort of a wonderful depth and dynamic to cigars. The same workmanship we might associate with the burled walnut dash of an old Jaguar is evident in the construction of the beautifully crafted wrapper and tightly packed blend of tobaccos inside. There is an understated elegance to the Dunhill brand. These cigars evoke a certain sense of class and refinement. There is an almost timeless quality in their appearance, the bands are beautiful, aligned perfectly, peeling off as easily as Elizabeth Hurley’s ballgown slipping off her shoulders.
The cigar has proprietary Dominican Ligero and Brazilian Mata Fina, a Dominican Olor binder, and Honduran Olancho wrapper leaf that give a mix of complex flavors and aromas with some spice on the finish.
These cigars smell like sweet aged tobacco. The appearance is enticing with a natural dark color and matching label. The wrapper almost glistens with oil, and is a beautifully veiny leaf. The cigar is packed tightly but has a surprising loose draw. Hints of earthy hay, white spice, painted against fresh earth, with a strong taste of cinnamon coming from the filler are consistent from beginning to end. It’s a complex well balanced group of flavors. Cool spice on top, short finish.
If you like a change of pace and the flavors of a Brazilian tobacco, you’ll see it elegantly showcased here.
